Acclimatization: why the first hot week is the most dangerous

The most dangerous heat of the summer is usually not the hottest day. It's the first properly hot week — the early-season stretch that arrives before anyone's body has adjusted to it.

By August, the same conditions are noticeably easier. Nothing about the weather changed. You did.

What actually adapts

Repeated heat exposure produces real, measurable physiological changes over about one to two weeks. They're substantial:

  • You start sweating sooner, at a lower core temperature, so cooling begins before you're in trouble rather than after.
  • You sweat more, increasing the total evaporative cooling available.
  • Your sweat gets more dilute — the body conserves salt, so you lose less electrolyte for the same cooling.
  • Plasma volume expands, which supports both blood pressure and the circulation that carries heat to your skin.

The effect is large enough that safety standards treat "acclimatized" and "unacclimatized" as genuinely different populations, with limits for the unacclimatized set several degrees WBGT lower.

Why this makes early season the risk window

Put those two facts together and the pattern falls out. In May and June, a warm spell arrives and finds a population with none of those adaptations in place — while the published guidance most people have in their heads is written for the acclimatized case. The same WBGT that's routine in August is genuinely demanding in June.

It also explains a few things that otherwise look strange:

  • Fitness doesn't substitute for acclimatization. A well-trained athlete who hasn't trained in heat is still unacclimatized. Fitness helps, but it isn't the same adaptation.
  • It fades. A week or two away from the heat — a cool spell, a holiday, time indoors — and you lose a meaningful part of it. Returning after a break is a smaller version of the same risk.
  • Travel creates it artificially. Flying from a cool climate into a hot one drops an unacclimatized body into peak conditions with no ramp at all.

How to build it safely

The adaptation comes from exposure, and the whole point is to get the exposure without the incident:

  • Ramp gradually. Increase intensity and duration over 7–14 days rather than going straight to a full session.
  • Do the hard work early or late in the first week, and move it later as you adapt.
  • Hydrate for the sweat you're now producing — the adaptation increases sweat rate, so fluid needs go up, not down.
  • Treat any break as a partial reset, and step back down when you return.

This is also why athletic heat-acclimatization protocols exist as formal rules: the first days of preseason are, statistically, when exertional heat illness clusters.

Where this shows up in the app

Acclimatization is one of the factors in the "safe for me" personalization: telling the app you're not yet used to the heat raises your personal risk read and can escalate the activity guidance into a stricter band, because the published bands assume an acclimatized person. It only ever escalates — personalization never relaxes the guidance below the objective reading.
