Indiana school sports heat policy
Indiana’s IHSAA sets no WBGT limits: it publishes a National Weather Service heat-index chart, and its one heat rule is about an NFHS course for coaches. How to read these labels

What IHSAA’s document says
IHSAA’s published heat resource is a heat-index chart, with the National Weather Service categories, not a WBGT table. The one heat rule in its 2025-26 by-laws, Rule 7, is about coaches completing the NFHS Heat Illness Prevention course, not about taking a reading. There is no statewide WBGT threshold for us to show you.
We won’t show another state’s WBGT thresholds in its place: regional tables differ by several degrees. Follow the policy your school, district or league has adopted. For general heat guidance at your field, open the map.
IHSAA Heat Index Information & ChartThis is a plain-language summary to help you plan. It is not legal advice, and it is not the association’s document. Associations revise these policies often. Confirm what currently applies with your school, district or association.
What else to know
- IHSAA’s chart shows the National Weather Service’s heat-index risk levels, from Caution to Extreme Danger, but sets no activity limits: it does not say when to shorten or stop practice. Ask your school what its own heat plan says.
- Iowa’s and Idaho’s associations are also called IHSAA, and Iowa’s publishes a WBGT policy, so a WBGT table labeled IHSAA may be Iowa’s rather than Indiana’s.
How to read this
We found no WBGT limits in IHSAA’s document. It uses the heat index instead, so there is no WBGT table to show. Your school or district may also have its own heat policy.
Before you rely on this
- This page summarizes IHSAA’s document. It does not replace it. If they differ, go by the document and by the policy your school or league has adopted.
- Confirm what currently applies with your school, district or association. Many schools adopt their own version.
- Any WBGT number WetBulbTracker shows is a modeled estimate for planning, not an official reading. Where a policy calls for an on-site reading, that reading governs.
- This page does not replace an athletic trainer’s judgment.
