Pennsylvania school sports heat policy
PIAA’s sports medicine guidelines recommend heat precautions and name one WBGT level for curtailing activity, not a full table of limits. How to read these labels

What PIAA’s document says
PIAA publishes guidance rather than a rule (“The following practices should be observed”), and it offers a heat index chart as an express alternative. It prints no zone table, so none is shown here, but it does print one WBGT number and it is a strict one: “A wet-bulb globe temperature (WBGT) higher than 82 degrees Fahrenheit (28 degrees Celsius) suggests that all activity be curtailed or discontinued.” Note that is far lower than the point at which the southern states cancel. PIAA also cautions separately on plain wet-bulb temperature above 75°F, which is a different measurement from WBGT.
We don’t have a single sourced threshold table for Pennsylvania, and we won’t put another state’s numbers in its place: regional tables differ by several degrees. Follow the policy your school, district or league has adopted. For general heat guidance at your field, open the map.
PIAA Sports Medicine Guidelines: Prevention of Heat IllnessThis is a plain-language summary to help you plan. It is not legal advice, and it is not the association’s document. Associations revise these policies often. Confirm what currently applies with your school, district or association.
What else to know
- PIAA’s guidelines also describe a 7-to-10-day acclimatization period for athletes to get used to the heat.
- PIAA prints these guidelines in the sports medicine section of its handbook, so look there for the current edition.
How to read this
PIAA’s document does not give one WBGT table for the whole state, so none is shown here. The summary above says why. Open the document to find the table or chart that applies to your school.
Before you rely on this
- This page summarizes PIAA’s document. It does not replace it. If they differ, go by the document and by the policy your school or league has adopted.
- Confirm what currently applies with your school, district or association. Many schools adopt their own version.
- Any WBGT number WetBulbTracker shows is a modeled estimate for planning, not an official reading. Where a policy calls for an on-site reading, that reading governs.
- This page does not replace an athletic trainer’s judgment.
