North Dakota school sports heat policy
NDHSAA’s recommended heat procedure, from 2013, uses the heat index rather than WBGT, so it sets no WBGT limits for North Dakota schools. How to read these labels

What NDHSAA’s document says
NDHSAA runs on heat index, not WBGT. Its “Recommended Heat and Humidity Management Procedure” has schools take temperature and humidity readings 30 minutes before an activity and again 60 minutes in, recorded in writing and kept on file, then read against a heat index chart: below 95, 95 to 99, above 99 to 104, and above 104, where it calls for all outside activity to stop. It attaches no WBGT thresholds at all, so there is no statewide WBGT rule for us to show. NDHSAA publishes it as a recommendation, and it also notes that below 80°F “there is no combination of heat and humidity that will result in need to curtail activity”.
We won’t show another state’s WBGT thresholds in its place: regional tables differ by several degrees. Follow the policy your school, district or league has adopted. For general heat guidance at your field, open the map.
NDHSAA Recommended Heat and Humidity Management Procedure (Board approved 8/7/13)This is a plain-language summary to help you plan. It is not legal advice, and it is not the association’s document. Associations revise these policies often. Confirm what currently applies with your school, district or association.
What else to know
- A page on NDHSAA’s website republishes the NFHS Sports Medicine Advisory Committee’s position statement on heat, dated April 2012. It is national guidance that sets no thresholds, not a second NDHSAA policy.
How to read this
We found no WBGT limits in NDHSAA’s document. It uses the heat index instead, so there is no WBGT table to show. Your school or district may also have its own heat policy.
Before you rely on this
- This page summarizes NDHSAA’s document. It does not replace it. If they differ, go by the document and by the policy your school or league has adopted.
- Confirm what currently applies with your school, district or association. Many schools adopt their own version.
- Any WBGT number WetBulbTracker shows is a modeled estimate for planning, not an official reading. Where a policy calls for an on-site reading, that reading governs.
- This page does not replace an athletic trainer’s judgment.
